WRANGELL, ALASKA The day after Barack Obama accepts the democratic nomination for United States president, presumptive republican candidate John McCain makes a surprise announcement – Alaska governor Sarah Palin will be his running mate for the presidential race. Palin, who's in the midst of her first term as governor, may be the next vice president of the United States.

House District 36 candidates, independent Dan Ortiz and Republican Bob Sivertsen, squared off in a town hall debate in the Wrangell Assembly chambers Wednesday. Constitution candidate Ken Shaw was invited, but was unable to attend.
