WCA gets ownership of Chief Shakes Bridge

The Wrangell Cooperative Association has acquired an important piece of the puzzle in its quest to renovate Chief Shakes Island and Tribal House. The Wrangell Assembly transferred the borough's half of the island's bridge to the WCA as part of a memorandum of understanding. KSTK's Tony Gorman has more.

Renowned Alaska author and adventurer shares experiences with Wrangell

Last month, one of Alaska's most accomplished author and travelers share some of his experiences with Wrangell. Nick Jans always wanted to go Alaska for the experience and its wonderful attributes. As the son of a diplomat, he had only spent one year in the states before entering junior high school. Jans jumped at the opportunity to go Alaska after he graduated from college. He stared his Alaska experience by working for a big game guide and managing a trading post before miving to Ambler to teach English to Eskimo children. He lasted 25 years in Ambler before moving to Juneau. His works have been featured in numerous magazines and his books have been nationally recognized. KSTK's Tony Gorman had a chance to sit down with him to talk about his latest book that he presented in Wrangell.

2010 Census hits Wrangell

The 2010 Census has finally reached Wrangell. The Census kicked off earlier this year in the tiny Inupiaq town of Noorvik. Since then, it has made its way down the state and eventually it will make its way back to the Lower 48. The Southeast, along with the rest of the state, will be paying close attention. With the population declining over the last decade, the region is on the verge of losing representation in the Alaska Legislature and funding for certain projects. KSTK's Tony Gorman had a chance to talk to Census Bureau Specialist Laverne Lamoureux and local representative Dave Wilson about the importance of the Census and its process.
