A biologist presents regional bat study, Thursday in Wrangell

Not a lot is known about bats in Southeast Alaska. From the number of species to what they do in the winter, scientists are looking at different ways to study these elusive nocturnal creatures. One way is through sound detection. Regional Wildlife Biologist Karen Blejwas will soon be visiting Wrangell to do just that.

Wrangell set to receive community orchard

Wrangell was one of twenty communities to win Dryer’s Fruit Bars’ “Community Take Root” contest last year. The program gives trees to communities through a non-profit known as the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation. Wrangell will receive more than 30 trees and plant its first community orchard. Sealaska donates twelve logs to Chief Shakes renovation project

The Sealaska Corporation’s board of directors recently approved the donation of twelve cedar tree logs for Wrangell Cooperative Association’s Chief Shakes Island renovation project. The project began last spring with the adzing of more than 7,000 sq ft of cedar boards to replace the walls, posts and flooring of the house.
