Nick Howell is organizing the first annual Tongass Toughman Triathlon. (June Leffler/ KSTK)

Talk on the Rock is KSTK’s live call-in show. Every Tuesday at 1pm we welcome a local guest to discuss events and topics of interest to our little island town. For this week’s episode, host June Leffler spoke with Nick Howell. He’s known in town for fitness, specifically pushing himself to his limits. He ran 100 miles last New Years. Nick says he’s generally bored with routine life and needs a challenge to keep him going. Through running, Nick has been able to see exactly how far his own endurance can take him.

This month, roughly six individuals and eight teams will participate in the Tongass Toughman Triathlon that Howell is organizing. It consists of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and 14.5-mile run all over the island. The event is June 30th. More details are available online.
