Chris Buness is the IGAP coordinator for Wrangell’s tribe. (June Leffler/ KSTK)

Talk on the Rock is KSTK’s live call-in show. Every Tuesday at 1pm we welcome a local guest to discuss events and topics of interest to our little island town. For this week’s episode, host June Leffler spoke with Chris Buness about the IGAP department’s upcoming household trash audit. It is one vital part of assessing what comprises our solid waste in town. Chris and her crew will go through the trash of 80 participating households. They’ll document amount of every single kind of waste you can imagine: cardboard, hard plastics, soft plastics, diapers, feminine hygiene products, food waste. Chris says knowing exactly what folks throw away and in what quantities can direct efforts to manage that waste (education, recycling programs, composting).

The team will start collecting and auditing trash next week. The data should be compiled by the end of the month.
