Alice Rooney was part of the founding of Hospice of Wrangell in 2001. (June Leffler/ KSTK)

Talk on the Rock is KSTK’s live call-in show. Every Tuesday at 1pm we welcome a local guest to discuss events and topics of interest to our little island town. For this week’s episode, host June Leffler spoke with Alice Rooney. She is recruiting for Hospice of Wrangell, also known as Harriet’s Helpers. The grassroots organization provides end of life care for those in our island town. Alice says compassion and willingness to help are essential, but so is the ability to maintain personal boundaries with your clients and the work itself.

The group will begin a 12-hour training program for new volunteers the week of October 14th. Contact Alice at rooney@aptalaska.net or 907-305-0007.

The group takes its name from Harriet Schirmer, a physician in town.
