Bonnie Demerjian is a Wrangell writer and musician, but she also has a passion for birding. (June Leffler/ KSTK)

Talk on the Rock is KSTK’s live call-in show. Every Tuesday at 1pm we welcome a local guest to discuss events and topics of interest to our little island town. For this week’s episode, host June Leffler spoke with Bonnie Demerjian, who organizes the Wrangell Christmas bird count. The count is part of an international effort by the Audubon Society to document resident birds throughout much of North America and elsewhere. The count has been going on for 120 years, providing substantial data to researchers on the health of our birds. Bonnie calls this a citizen science effort, since volunteers are the one’s collecting the data.

Aside from the history and research findings, Bonnie told us more about the local effort. This Saturday, December 14, about 15 volunteers will circumvent a 7-mile radius within Wrangell Island and nearby waters.
