Wrangell’s former hospital building and surrounding property are up for sale

The minimum bid for the nearly 85,000-square-foot property is $830,000.

The old Wrangell Medical Center was built in the late 1960s, and served as the community’s medical hub until early 2021, when a new hospital came online. That’s owned and operated by the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC).

Wrangell’s borough assembly had initially considered putting the former hospital and land up for auction on a public surplus site – a strategy used to sell several borough properties over the last year. But it ultimately decided to do a sealed bid process.

Part of the reasoning for selling through sealed bids instead of an auction is a local ordinance on large property sales in Wrangell. If the highest bid goes over $1 million, Wrangell voters would need to approve the sale, which would be placed on the October municipal ballot.

Bids must be delivered by mail to P.O. Box 531 in Wrangell (99929) or in-person at City Hall, and are due by June 30 at noon. The sealed bids on the former Wrangell Medical Center will then be opened and publicly read aloud in the borough assembly chambers.
