Recreation and Road Report for August 9th through August 16th

Road Conditions/Construction:

  • On Wrangell Island, the road closure on the mainline McCormack Creek Road 6265 will last into this week, as crews finish up back-filling around the new AOP pipe which was installed this past weekend. Work is weather dependent which precludes us from knowing a specific date for completion. The public can still access recreation sites by using the Nemo Road 6267.

Logging Traffic:

  • There are falling and logging operations on the Upper Basin Road 6263.

Community Information:

  • Federal subsistence harvest permits for fish & wildlife are being issued at the District office. To speed up the process, it helps if you call the Wrangell District front desk at 874-2323 beforehand so it can be prepared before pickup. As sockeye season has closed, please remember to return your reports. There is now a drop box outside of the District Office where you can return them.

Recreational Reminders:

  • As the beginning of deer season arrives, we would like to remind hunters that it is illegal and unsafe to shoot from, across or along roadways.
  • National Visitor Use Monitoring Surveys will be conducted in Wrangell until September. This is a national voluntary survey conducted to monitor forest recreation use- they are confidential and last up to ten minutes. The information collected is used for National Forest funding & planning, so please stop & give a few moments of your time when you encounter surveyors at recreation sites & harbors or receive phone calls asking about cabin visits.
  • Permits are required for visiting Anan Wildlife Observatory from July 5th –August 25th. There has been an interest in obtaining last minute permits, so we are reestablishing a lottery system to distribute the last four daily Anan permits. Requests are now being accepted in-person at the Wrangell District front desk, and a schedule for requesting dates and more details on this process can be found by contacting the front desk at 874-2323.

Community Programs:

  • Community led Nemo Potlucks are being held every Friday night starting at 6pm, continuing through the summer until the last Friday in August. Location is at the Nemo Information Site, which is the first developed site on the Nemo Recreation Loop (#6267), approximately 15 miles south of Wrangell.
