Wrangell’s 30-day filing period to run for local office opens today (August 1). People interested in running for a municipal government seat must file paperwork with Wrangell’s borough clerk.
Candidates will then be placed on the ballot for this year’s municipal election, scheduled for October 3.
Four seats are up for election this year: two seats on Wrangell’s borough assembly, one seat on the school board, and one seat on the Port Commission. All of the open seats have three-year terms.
Wrangell’s borough assembly approves local laws and gives direction to the borough manager and other borough staff. The school board sets school district policies and oversees the running of Wrangell’s three public schools. The port commission helps advise the harbormaster on Wrangell’s port and harbor upkeep and harbor policies.
Anyone interested in running for an open seat can file with the Borough Clerk’s Office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays starting on August 1. Each candidate must also collect at least 10 signatures from Wrangell registered voters and return them to the clerk by August 31.
Wrangell’s municipal election will take place on October 3, with voting at the Nolan Center.
