Polls are open for Wrangell’s 2023 municipal election. 

Voters can cast ballots until 8 p.m. this evening at the Nolan Center. 

There are four local government seats up for election: two seats on the Borough Assembly (three-year terms); one seat on Wrangell’s school board (a three-year term); and one seat on the Port Commission (a three-year term). 

One race is contested: the race for the open school board seat. 

In the school board race, incumbent board member Aaltséen Esther Reese is running against challenger John DeRuyter. Read or listen to KSTK’s interview with the two candidates here

The other races on the municipal ballot are uncontested.

Current assembly member Anne Morrison is running for re-election. Newcomer Michael Ottesen is running for the other open seat on the borough assembly. KSTK’s interviews with the assembly candidates can be found here.

The port commission race is also uncontested. Incumbent port commissioner Gary Morrison is running for re-election. Find an interview with Morrison on his bid for re-election here.

There are no local ballot measures this year. 

Anyone not voting in person who requested an absentee by-mail ballot must have it postmarked by today, October 3. 

KSTK expects to receive unofficial election results shortly after the polls close at 8 p.m. on October 3. Wrangell’s 2023 municipal election will be certified by the canvass board and certified by the borough assembly on October 5.
