Wrangell residents have until May 20 to apply for Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster assistance. The financial assistance is for the deadly landslide that happened last November.

Those who might qualify may have experienced losses such as subsistence foods, firewood, property damage or death.

FEMA isn’t able to duplicate funds, which means that if the state already covered something, that same item can not be covered again. This also applies if insurance or other programs covered a particular commodity.

Interested residents first need to register with FEMA to determine their eligibility – even if they registered for the State of Alaska’s disaster assistance program.

The Alaska-specific FEMA hotline to apply for individual assistance is 1-866-342-1699. People can also apply at disasterassistance.gov or use the FEMA mobile app.
