Here is your Recreation and Road Report for the week of June 9 through 13.

Road Conditions/Construction and Logging Activity:

  • Logging activities and log haul continue from the Upper Basin area-Yoder timber sale, FS road number 6263 into the industrial park in Wrangell-Matney Lumber. 
  • Logging and log haul from the Fool’s Inlet area-Wrangell Island #1 timber sale may be occurring from FS road 6270.
  • FS Rec Crew will begin work on the Hot Tubs trail this week!

Anan Wildlife Observatory:  

  • Anan Wildlife Observatory permit season starts July 5th.  There are still permits available for many days on recreation.gov if you have your own boat/floatplane to get there. 
  • If there are no more permits available on recreation.gov for the day you are interested in, 4 permits each day are available through a weekly lottery. All lottery requests must be made in person at the Wrangell Ranger District office. Weekly requests will be collected by Mondays at 4:30 and awarded on Tuesdays by noon.

  • For those who will need to purchase transportation to Anan, please contact an authorized guide directly for both passage and permits.
  • And for those wondering about the wildlife, Anan staff saw Scuba Sue last week as well as 2 other brown bears and a few black bears and 3 minks.

Recreational Reminders:      

  • Forest Explorers starts June 17th! Day has changed from the original date of June 10th. Every Tuesday from 10:30 – 12:00 at the Nature trail.
  • Reading with a Ranger will begin on Thursday June 12th. The program will continue every Thursday from 10:30-12 at the library.  Come join for some fun activities!
