Here is your Recreation and Road Report for the week of July 7th through 11th.

This announcement is courtesy of the Wrangell Ranger District and KSTK.

Road Conditions/Construction and Logging Activity:

  • Logging activities and log haul continue from the Upper Basin area, Yoder Timber Sale to FS road 6263 into the industrial park in Wrangell-Matney Lumber. 
  • Logging and log haul from the Fool’s Inlet area, Wrangell Island #1 Timber Sale may be occurring from FS road 6270.
  • Crews have finished the road work on Zarembo island, and the slide is clear. The middle road is open.
  • Middle Ridge Road FS road 50060 is still closed.
  • Roosevelt dock will unlikely be fixed by hunting season.

Anan Wildlife Observatory:  

  • Anan Wildlife Observatory permit season starts July 5th.  There are still permits available for most days on recreation.gov if you have your own boat/floatplane to get there. 
  •  If there are no more permits available on recreation.gov for the day you are interested in, 4 permits each day are available through weekly lotteries.
  •  All lottery requests must be made in person at the Wrangell Ranger District office. Weekly requests will be collected by Mondays at 4:30 and awarded on Tuesdays by noon.

Fish are trickling in at Anan.  Watch explore.org to catch a glimpse of the bears as they follow the fish into Anan.

Recreational Reminders:             

  • Forest Explorers will be this Tuesday from 10:30 – 12:00 at the Nature Trail.
  • Reading with a Ranger will be at the library this Thursday from 10:30-12:00. Kids are invited for fun activities!
  • The Rec. crew did an amazing job clearing and fixing the hot tubs trail for all the summer visitors!
  • The Rec. crew has moved a load of lumber to the hot tubs dock; it is for a current ongoing project to replace part of the outdoor tub deck. Please be respectful while visiting the tubs.
  • Rec. crew also brushed and maintained the Virginia Lake cabin and Mill Creek trail.
  • A reminder to please not wound trees while out in the forest, harm to our trees could cause them to become sick and potentially hazardous later.
