Recreation and Road Report

Here is your Recreation and Road Report for the week of July 28 through August 3

This announcement is courtesy of the Wrangell Ranger District and KSTK.

Road Conditions/Construction and Logging Activity:

• Logging activities and log haul continue from the Upper Basin area-Yoder Timber Sale to FS road number 6263 into the industrial park in Wrangell-Matney Lumber. 
• Logging and log haul from the Fool’s Inlet area-Wrangell Island #1 Timber Sale may be occurring from FS road 6270.
• Crews have finished the road work on Zarembo island, and the slide is clear. The middle road is open.

• Middle Ridge Road FS #50060 is still closed.
• Roosevelt dock will unlikely be fixed by hunting season.

Anan Wildlife Observatory:  

• Anan Wildlife Observatory permit season is underway.  You need a permit to visit Anan from July 5th – August 25th. There are still some permits available on recreation.gov for $20 if you have your own boat/floatplane to get there. 
• For those who will need to purchase transportation to Anan, contact an authorized guide directly for both passage and permits. Find information about which guide company has available permits for each day of the permit season on anancalendar.com.  
• If there are no more permits available on recreation.gov for the day you are interested in, 4 permits each day are available through weekly lotteries. All lottery requests must be made in person at the Wrangell Ranger District office.
• Weekly requests will be collected by Mondays at 4:30 and awarded on Tuesdays by noon.    

The Request Schedule is as follows:

Wildlife updates from the Anan rangers: Both brown and black bears have been observed at Anan daily. There are lots of fish in the creek.  Some very cute cubs are hanging around as well.

Recreational Reminders:      

• Forest Explorers will be combining with Ocean Explorers! If you sign up for Forest Explorers, please join the WCA for Ocean Explorers at City Park beach! Same day and time!
• Reading with a Ranger will continue at the Library this Thursday from 10:30-12. Kids are invited to join for some fun activities! This week features a special Bearfest Guest!!!
• Bearfest is this week. Everyone is encouraged to join in on some activities.
• The Rec. crew did an amazing job clearing and repairing the hot tub trail.
• The Rec. crew has moved a load of lumber to the hot tubs dock; it is for a current ongoing project to replace part of the outdoor tub deck. Construction will take place August 26^th – September 7^th. Please be respectful while visiting the tubs.
• The Rec. crew also brushed and maintained around the Virginia Lake Cabin and Mill Creek Trail.
• A reminder to please not wound trees while out in the forest, harm to trees could cause them to become sick and potentially hazardous later.
