Brian Hockenstein and Laura Davies visit KSTK on Aug. 19, 2025 to talk about mentoring students on media arts. (Colette Czarnecki/KSTK)

Episode 64: Wrangell Public School teacher Laura Davies and documentary filmmaker and photographer Brian Hockenstein from British Columbia met earlier this year at the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival. She brought two of her students who made documentaries to the festival. Shortly after meeting, she asked Hockenstein to visit Wrangell during the summer and work with the students for a week on visual media. In June, he sailed to the island from Vancouver and worked with the students in late July. Davies also organized a film screening at The Nolan Center during that week on a variety of Hockenstein’s work, where he talked to the community about the process and his experience making those films.

The two sat down with KSTK’s Colette Czarnecki to share the development of working with students and media.
