The Wrangell Borough Assembly tonight will consider authorizing loan applications to assist the McKinnon Street improvement project. These loans would address water and sewer utility replacement. One of the loans is at $315,719 from the Alaska Drinking Water State Revolving Loan Program. It would replace approximately 280 ft. of a six-inch asbestos cement water main.

The other loan is at $290,912 from the Alaska Clean Water State Revolving Loan Program. That would cover rehabilitating nearly 280 ft. of a 12 in. gravity sewer main. The whole project includes construction, design and permitting.

Both loans would have to be repaid within 20 years from the borough’s sewer fund reserves.

Additionally, at the meeting, the assembly will consider accepting a harbor facility grant of $481,109.50 from the State of Alaska to complete the installation of a new float at Meyers Chuck. This is part of a 50/50 match of up to $1.09 million where the municipality would pay the other half.

The assembly would have to amend the FY26 capital budget to accept these grants as part of the 50% contribution to the construction project phase.

Afterwards, the assembly will head into executive session to discuss the current barge service and waterfront development options. They’ll also consider the possible adverse effects these options have on the borough’s finances.

The Wrangell Borough Assembly will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, August 26 at 6 p.m. in the Borough Assembly Chambers at Wrangell City Hall.
