The Wrangell Borough Assembly will consider adding a fifth, full-time position that’s split between the water and wastewater treatment plant operations. That’s one of the items on the assembly’s agenda at its regular meeting scheduled for Tuesday night.

The assembly will consider dividing these costs equally between the two departments. This involves amending the FY 2026 budget to reach a combined total of $114,230 for the salary.

The borough said a fifth employee is necessary because the new water treatment plant has more chemistry involved, and the machine is sensitive. This was made evident during a boil water notice over the summer.

The additional position would include weekend coverage, which Wrangell currently lacks.

Additionally, the assembly will consider accepting $204,581.20 in grant funds for skeet and shooting range improvements.

The funding is from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Wildlife Conservation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. If approved, the City and Borough of Wrangell would have to match the total cost by 10%. That would be $22,312.44.

The Wrangell Borough Assembly will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 6p.m. in the Borough Assembly Chambers at Wrangell City Hall.
