The Wrangell Borough Assembly will consider approving the exchange of borough-owned tideland property for the construction of a parking lot at today’s meeting.
The lot, which will be on Reid Street and contracted by BW Enterprises, would serve Wrangell’s High School and other nearby community facilities. Currently, traffic congestion exists in the area during school hours and community events. BW Enterprises would then gain two lots on Evergreen Avenue, adjacent to their other property.
The current excavation of St. Michael’s Street will provide the materials to fill the parking lot. This would reduce costs for the borough. The borough manager said this exchange has no fiscal impact on the borough.
Also at today’s meeting, the assembly will consider extending Alder Top Village’s sale date by about a month for nine lots in the new subdivision. The reason for the extension is because borough staff would like to complete the roadway and utility work before the sale. Construction was stopped last month due to archaeological findings in the area. Previously, this was the site of a government boarding school for Native children. Currently, the bidding end date is Oct. 31.
So far, the borough has received a total of six bids for lots. If the assembly approves the extension, the borough clerk will email the bidders notifying them of the new date.
Wrangell’s assembly will also consider amending the FY25 budget in the Port fund to transfer $65,000 to the professional services account.
This will go towards waterfront bathymetry, the measurement and mapping of the bottom of a water body floor.
The funds will also go towards the fill design for developing both Wrangell’s downtown waterfront and six miles out of town. That’s the deep water port where the new barge ramp is proposed to be placed.
The Ports and Harbor department said this is necessary to advance planning for tideland fill and other infrastructure.
KSTK will air the regular borough assembly meeting beginning at 6 p.m. on 101.7 FM, online at KSTK.org and livestreamed at the city’s website.
