Early in-person voting is underway at locations across the state for Alaska’s Aug. 18 primary election, including in Wrangell where registered voters can cast their ballot between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays at City Hall through Aug. 17.
The primary election will decide which of the multiple candidates for U.S. House, U.S. Senate and governor will be on the November general election ballot. The top four vote-getters in each race will advance to the general election.
Voters in the primary get to choose their top candidate for each office, then voters in November will rank their top choices for each of those offices to determine the winner.
The Aug. 18 primary election also will decide whether Alaskans want to limit the amount of money that political donors can give directly to candidates.
If voters approve the ballot measure, individuals would be limited to giving $2,000 per candidate in each two-year election cycle. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned Alaska’s prior limits in 2021, and the state has been without limits on political contributions since then.
On election day Tuesday, Aug. 18, the state polling booths will be set up at the Nolan Center from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Election officials advise voters to bring a photo ID if they are new to town and may not be recognized by election workers.
