Captain Chase Green with the Wrangell Salvation Army Church is encouraging Wrangell to “Boldly” embrace on the holiday season. Each year, as we ramp up to the holiday season, the Salvation Army gets busy making sure everyone in Wrangell has holiday meals and gifts for kids under the tree.
This year, in addition to the Angel Tree program, the Turkey Drive and the Red Kettle Round-Up, the Salvation Army is launching their Bold Campaign. Captain Chase explains they are asking 10 people to boldly donate $1,000 to the Christmas Campaign this year. This level of donation will make a significant difference for families in Wrangell and will ensure that every family has holiday meals and gifts under the tree.
Another way to help local families is to participate in the Thanksgiving Turkey Drive. People are encouraged to go to either local grocery store, Wrangell IGA or City Market, on November 20th or 21st and buy a turkey for a Wrangell family. You don’t have to think about what kind of side dish food to purchase, just get a turkey and you’re done.
Angel trees will sprout up in Wrangell this week at First Bank, the Library and at the Salvation Army Church. Each tree has individual Angel tags representing a child in our community, with information about what toy that child is wishing for, clothing sizes, as well as the child’s gender and age. People can purchase the items on the tag and then drop off those unwrapped items at the location where they picked the tag, or at the Salvation Army Church. Organizers will make sure the gifts are delivered to the appropriate child. Captain Chase points out that while presents aren’t the focus of the holiday season, when a child has gifts to open on Christmas morning, they feel loved, special, and emotionally supported.
The 5th Annual Dinner and Auction will take place at the Stikine on December 5th. The Stikine will serve prime rib dinner and attendees will have an opportunity to bid on a variety of items that are appealing to people in Wrangell. Tickets will be on sale at the event and at the Salvation Army as we get closer to the event.
Anyone who wants to participate in the Bold Giving program, or who has questions about any of the local Salvation Army fundraisers may contact the church at (907) 874-3753. All donations go directly to assist Wrangell families.
