Talk on the Rock: John Martin and Corey Marsden on the upcoming canoe journey to Celebration

In about two weeks a group of people will venture off on a canoe to paddle to Juneau for Celebration. Celebration is one of the largest Southeast Alaska Native gatherings. It’s a biennial festival held by SeaAlaska Heritage Institute. The last time people paddled to Celebration from Wrangell in their own canoe was in 2014. So, a decade ago. Other communities will meet in Wrangell as well this year to make the paddle journey. Two paddlers, John Martin and Corey Marsden, speak to KSTK’s Colette Czarnecki about their experiences and what they’re looking forward to for this upcoming journey.

Wrangell Assembly preview: school budget, runway lights and the water treatment plant

Wrangell Borough Assembly will discuss several budget items at its meeting Tuesday night. That includes how much the borough should give to the local school district. The assembly will consider approving the local contribution of $1.3 million for the next fiscal year. That’s $450,000 less than the school district requested.

Wrangell middle school students made documentaries and podcasts that will be viewed at the Stikine Stories Film Festival

Sixth grader Erika Jabusch and her brother, Jimmy, recently interviewed their grandfather, Jeff Jabusch, for a documentary they were producing about the Wrangell Hoop Shoot.

Master weaver, Holly Churchill, taught week-long workshop this spring

Master weaver Holly Churchill of Ketchikan visited Wrangell during the last week of March. She instructed a group of people to weave traditional Haida hats out of cedar bark. The group spent 40 hours at the Wrangell Cooperative Association Cultural Center, preparing the cedar strips and keeping the plant material hydrated. The final step was the actual weaving. Some students have weaved before while others not-so-much. In addition, other students have more practice with Ravenstail weaving, which uses animal fibers, not cedar.

Wrangell residents have until May 20 to apply for FEMA disaster assistance

Wrangell residents have until May 20 to apply for Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster assistance. The financial assistance is for the deadly landslide that happened last November.
