In an effort to keep up with federal and state environmental standards, including the Clean Water Act, a wash-down pad and treatment center are being installed as part of Wrangell's travelift. This has caused the boat haul-out facility to be shut down since June 15. The new additions will prevent potential contaminants that are linked with the marine service center, like metals in boat paint, from getting into the ocean. Recently, KSTK's Lisa Phu went down to the port yard to check out the new construction. Harbor master Greg Meissner joined her and explained how everything works.

Two weeks after the Wrangell borough assembly decided to approve a confidentiality and non-circumvention agreement with private company Cascade Creek LLC, the possibility of reconsidering that decision was brought up.

The Forest Service of the Tongass National Forest has signed the decision to move forward with the second phase of the Baht timber sale on Zarembo Island, located 17 miles west of Wrangell. This phase of the sale is located in units of the forest that are currently roadless, and the sale will require the construction of just over two miles of road. This is on top of the 12 miles already proposed for the first phase of the timber sale.

Around thirty people got a running – or walking – start on Wrangell's July fourth with the Parks and Rec Fun Run. The rest of the day continued in the same fast pace with the Fourth of July parade, logging show, junior olympics, street games, fireworks, and much, much more. The Great Alaska Bluegrass Band, with guest artist Sean Tracey, is in Wrangell for various live performances throughout the fourth of July holiday. If you missed hearing them last night at the Nolan Center, you still have three more chances to hear them perform. The Great Alaska Bluegrass Band stopped by the KSTK studio Wednesday afternoon to play some music and talk about the band.
