The community of Wrangell is mourning the death of fisherman Randy Churchill Jr. The 39-year-old died in a tragic logging accident Wednesday morning (February 22). 

Shipping trash off-island is expensive in Southeast. Wrangell’s tribal environmental office is piloting a new composting program it hopes will eventually help reduce those costs, and help local gardens grow as well.

Kelp grows naturally throughout Alaska’s waterways and is also grown and harvested by an expanding commercial seaweed industry. New research shows kelp has ecological benefits by absorbing pollution in the water. 

ADF&G opposed the hunt, but strong support from Wrangell and other local communities helped convince the board to take the leap.
