Nationwide EAS and Text EAS Postponed

FEMA, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), postponed the nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) until October 3 due to ongoing response efforts to Hurricane Florence.

If you have a smartphone, you will first hear a tone followed by a text message that reads: “THIS IS A TEST of the national wireless emergency alert system, no action is needed.” The nationwide wireless test is scheduled for 10:18 am Alaska Time, followed by a radio and TV broadcast EAS at 10:20 am Alaska Time on Wednesday, October 3rd.

Shoemaker Power and Frequency 91.9

Electricity to Shoemaker Bay will shut off on Monday, September 24th to accommodate the Shoemaker Bay renovation project. Consequently, KSTK’s Shoemaker Bay translator that broadcasts on frequency 91.9 fm will not be powered for the duration of the project. This will affect radio reception south of Nemo Point until approximately the end of December.

Precautionary Water Advisory Lifted

After reviewing the City of Wrangell’s recent sewer main break with EPA’s compliance division, Wrangell is not required to perform ambient water quality monitoring. EPA recognizes the high level of flushing that occurs in our wastewater discharge basin, as identified by the high effluent standards set for Wrangell’s primary wastewater treatment facility. The earlier-issued precautionary recreational water advisory has now been lifted.

Water Service Disruption

UPDATE Thursday, 4:30 p.m:
Public Works will be shutting down all water service throughout town effective immediately Thursday afternoon. It is anticipated that water service will be returned by late evening tonight, barring no further impairments to the system.
