Nolan Center unveils repatriated Tlingit objects this weekend

A brown tobacco pipe sits in a display case – it’s about the length of two hands and features inlayed blue minerals from abalone shells. It has two faces looking away from each other and the shank stretches up in the center – it tells a story of the Gunakadeit, which is a sea monster in Tlingit culture. It’s one of four repatriated Tlingit clan objects that the Nolan Center is showcasing.

Wrangell Assembly preview: school budget, runway lights and the water treatment plant

Wrangell Borough Assembly will discuss several budget items at its meeting Tuesday night. That includes how much the borough should give to the local school district. The assembly will consider approving the local contribution of $1.3 million for the next fiscal year. That’s $450,000 less than the school district requested.

Master weaver, Holly Churchill, taught week-long workshop this spring

Master weaver Holly Churchill of Ketchikan visited Wrangell during the last week of March. She instructed a group of people to weave traditional Haida hats out of cedar bark. The group spent 40 hours at the Wrangell Cooperative Association Cultural Center, preparing the cedar strips and keeping the plant material hydrated. The final step was the actual weaving. Some students have weaved before while others not-so-much. In addition, other students have more practice with Ravenstail weaving, which uses animal fibers, not cedar.
