Three Wrangell leaders — spanning generations — elected to Alaska Native Sisterhood

It’s been ten years since Wrangell hosted an Alaska Native Sisterhood and Brotherhood Grand Camp, an annual gathering where members discuss priorities, vote during elections and celebrate culturally. And this past October was the first in-person year since the COVID-19 pandemic. The Alaska Native Brotherhood members formed in 1912 and ANS three years later. Both groups have been fighting for civil rights and land claims ever since.

Episode 69: Next month will be the 113th Alaska Native Brotherhood and Alaska Native Sisterhood Grand Camp and it will be held at Wrangell’s Nolan Center on Oct. 1 to Oct. 4. The Alaska Native Sisterhood Grand President, Sandy Churchill, stopped by KSTK to discuss with News Director Colette Czarnecki on what the oldest known Indigenous persons civil rights organization means to her and what to expect during the Grand Camp.
