Episode 76: Audrey Cotter and Scott Dickerson have been spending a lot of time in Wrangell’s boat yard over the past couple months. They bought the Alaskan Gypsy in Ketchikan and chose Wrangell’s Marine Service Center to fix it up. Cotter and Dickerson share their experiences with KSTK’s Colette Czarnecki on Wrangell, living on a boat and their future plans. They just put the Alaskan Gypsy back in the water and will motor away from the island community for a little while. They’ve been documenting their boat life experience on their YouTube channel, The Alaskan Gypsy Life.

Freight is Wrangell’s lifeline, like other Southeast Alaska communities. The borough decommissioned its barge ramp earlier this year. Since then, officials have been figuring out where to put the new one. Engineers deemed he 47-year-old ramp unsafe due to its deteriorating structure.

During the second part of KSTK’s “In the boatyard” series, Garret Vincentz talked about Lady Jane, a purse seiner he’s had for the last decade. He, his wife Jerrine and other crew members were prepping the boat up before they launched for shrimp season last month. Not only has Lady Jane fed Vincentz and his family over the years, but she’s also saved a few sinking boats. KSTK’s Colette Czarnecki sends this audio postcard from the Wrangell boatyard.

Springtime on the coast means many people spend time in the boatyard prepping their fishing boats for the season. It’s a lifestyle that they depend on to survive. KSTK’s Colette Czarnecki stopped by the Wrangell Marine Service Center to get a glimpse into the close relationships between fishermen and their boats. In the first story of KSTK’s series “In the boatyard” she first visited the Norcel, a wooden purse seiner that vessel owner Amy Schaub has spent the last 16 years with, fishing for salmon in Southeast Alaska.
