A brown tobacco pipe sits in a display case – it’s about the length of two hands and features inlayed blue minerals from abalone shells. It has two faces looking away from each other and the shank stretches up in the center – it tells a story of the Gunakadeit, which is a sea monster in Tlingit culture. It’s one of four repatriated Tlingit clan objects that the Nolan Center is showcasing.

Wrangell’s Nolan Center will host Blue Ticket on Monday. It’s a film of a play with the same name that KTOO documented back in 2019. The play’s author, Maureen Longworth, documented how gay men in Juneau were exiled from the city in the 1960s. The Nolan Center in Wrangell recently hired Jeannie Arnold as its new director. The center is used for many community purposes – the Wrangell Museum, movie theater, community plays, visitor’s center, classrooms and the gift shop.
